Extrema Ratio MK2.1 Review

Welcome to our review of the MK2.1 by Extrema Ratio. A highly functional fixed blade knife that is sure to be a great fit for various tactical and outdoor purposes.
The MK2.1 itself was originally designed as an updated version of the MARK 2—a legendary combat knife used heavily throughout WWII. While this blade, much like the classic M1911 handgun, had a very good reason for being so highly favored by soldiers, even the best of concepts can be improved upon.
And what the team at Extrema Ratio did to improve on this system is the definition of taking something that is already good and making it even better.
Let's discuss the details about this extraordinary blade and take a look at why the MK2.1 is the ultimate operator companion.

The MK2.1 Blade

The MK2.1 is comprised of six unique parts that can be completely disassembled and reassembled in a highly functional and intuitive way.
It is a process that I found very enjoyable from the get-go and I was immediately impressed by the build quality of all of the different parts. Everything moves and turns in a seamless motion, the threads are engineered to absolute perfection and while the main purpose of this function is for maintenance of the knife, I found myself repeating the process multiple times for training purposes and getting to know my tool.
While disassembly and reassembly are very common for firearms, seeing this process in a knife is absolutely amazing. I have handled other knives that could be taken apart but none of them matched the functionality and efficiency of the MK2.1.
One important thing to keep in mind: when you take the MK2.1 apart, there is one small part inside the tang that enables the bottom piece to screw back in.
If you are unaware of this, it is very easy for this part to get lost or drop as you pull off the handle. To illustrate my point, here is the specific part in question that connects the MK2.1 system together in a true zero-tolerance fashion.

As you can see this part is a pretty small sized insert that fits right into the tang of the MK2.1 blade, it is the piece that allows the bottom screw pommel to fully screw in and secure the system in place.

In the following video example I am going to demonstrate exactly how this works on our new channel PWC Tactical:

The MK2.1 Sheath

The MK2.1 sheath features an impressively complex yet intuitive design that speaks to the precision engineering and passionate innovation Extrema Ratio is known for. Every single part of it is of superior build quality and functions flawlessly.

Once you clear the primary sheath cover, you engage the secondary retention grid. The handle is anchored by twin heavy-duty snaps that deliver a deeply satisfying, high-tension release.
This is the exact opposite of budget gear—every click and snap exudes uncompromising structural integrity. It is a flawless deployment sequence built for the most elite operators.

This picture alone demonstrates the level of quality and purpose-driven design of the additional locking system which secures the blade in place.
While I first unboxed the blade out of its sheath, I actually had to apply slightly more force on the buttons to unlatch them—however, this is something that also truly impressed me as it is a sign of a system both secure and efficient.

The more I repeated this process, the easier it became to unlatch the buttons however, even after months of usage, it never lost its original "secure click" feeling.

Overall, the build quality of the entire sheath is truly outstanding—you can clearly see the intricate and thoughtful design in every fiber of the material, which gives it a true high-end feel. It is safe to say that this is the best knife sheath I have ever owned.

One of the most practical and useful features is the included strap, which allows you to carry the MK2.1 on your belt while it is simultaneously strapped around your thigh—ensuring 100% operational efficiency. It feels great to carry.
Let me show you an example of how this looks:

Here is a video showcasing how to unsheath and resheath the MK2.1. You can see the efficiency and security of the system—holding the blade perfectly in place while still allowing for a quick draw.

N690 - a special type of steel

To the layman, steel is simply metal—a tool measured only by how long it holds an edge or how hard it is to sharpen. To the enthusiast, N690 is a known quantity: a reliable, high-end stainless steel favored by European masters. They will talk about Rockwell hardness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance.
All of these metrics apply to the MK2.1, but for me, they are merely the surface. They are not the reason I resonate with this blade on a spiritual level. The true power of the MK2.1 lies deeper, buried in the elemental recipe of its creation.
The MK2.1 is forged from Böhler N690, a cobalt-enriched stainless steel. But to understand why this matters, we must look beyond the 'steel' and recognize the rare alchemy at its core—a fusion of Cobalt and Chromium.
These are not just industrial additives; they are Artifacts of the Earth. To explain what I mean, look at the raw essence of these materials:

Cobalt: A metal as blue as the deepest ocean or the Lapis Lazuli of ancient kings. It is magnetic, intense, and historically used to tint the glass of cathedrals. In this blade, it is the soul that grants the steel its supernatural resilience and edge-holding capability; it elevates iron into something noble.
Chromium: The shield. It is the element of brilliance and resistance. It fights the corrosion of the world, keeping the blade pure in even the harshest environments.
When you hold the MK2.1, you are not just holding "steel." You are holding a precise, tactical fusion of these primal elements—Cobalt for strength, Chromium for purity—forged by Italian masters into a weapon that feels less like a tool and more like a crystallized extension of will.

A significant evolution from its historical predecessor, the MARK 2, the MK2.1 introduces a unique geometric shift. It features a specialized 'spear tip' point, specifically engineered to optimize the blade as a high-performance thrusting and penetration tool. Furthermore, the precision etching—a tactical 'incantation' featuring the Extrema Ratio logo—is a sophisticated aesthetic touch that reinforces the elite lineage of this Italian-made masterpiece.

Another impressive feature of the MK2.1 is the durable, glass-fiber-strengthened nylon handle, which ensures significantly higher resistance to environmental degradation. Mounted to this grip is the massive, heavyweight pommel. While we’ve already demonstrated its function as the twist-cap for disassembly, this component is far more than a fastener; it serves as a dedicated tool in multiple potential scenarios.

The MK2.1 pommel is not an afterthought; it is a dedicated, multi-spectrum tool. This massive steel heel serves three distinct operational purposes:

- Emergency Extraction: Designed to instantly shatter vehicle glass during high-stress egress scenarios.

- Survival Utility: Engineered with enough mass to function as a heavyweight hammer for driving shelter stakes into unforgiving terrain.

- CQC Dominance: Functions as a devastating blunt-force impact weapon; for special operations units, having a secondary, less-lethal strike option on the heel of the blade is the ultimate tactical advantage in hand-to-hand combat.

Ultimately, the MK2.1 stands as one of the most formidable assets I have ever fielded. From the modular architecture that allows for seamless field-stripping and maintenance, to what is unequivocally the most perfectly engineered deployment sheath I have ever tested—every detail is deliberate.

The devastating blade geometry, the weather-impervious grip, and the aggressive Desert Warfare profile fuse together into a flawless system. For operators who demand the peak of bayonet-style fixed blades, the MK2.1 receives my absolute 100% recommendation.

Securing this to your drop-leg rig isn't just about carrying a knife; it is about guaranteeing total tactical readiness in any environment. That is the true essence of a Sovereign blade.
